The Real Supermom

I am not a “super mom” even though I have the t-shirt. What I am is a willing and present mom. A listening mom. A teaching in-the-moment mom. No matter what I am doing, I choose to stop when my children have questions or just need to tell me something (even if it’s not something that interests me like Minecraft). I may have them wait for me to find a stopping point in my work, but then I give them my full attention. To them, I am Supermom. “but for the grace of God” who loaned me these precious ones to guide and love. They teach me as much or more than I teach them and we do a lot of learning together as we grow up in the Lord.

As mothers, our worship, our service, begins in the home. It’s often a thankless, grueling job. Yet it’s also a rewarding and fulfilling job. We are called to be good stewards of all God gives us, including our family. I’m not advocating for the 1950s TV homemaker with heels and pearls. I’m advocating for showing up first and best in the home. Oh, what a challenge that can be! In our homes, we all get comfortable. The people closest to us are the ones who get the brunt of all the big emotions: the good, the bad, and the ugly. It takes patience and gentleness to nurture our children through times of disobedience, rebellion, or angst. It takes humility and kindness to listen to their struggles, comfort them, and offer wisdom.

I am not a supermom. I don’t do these things perfectly. I am willing to allow the Creator to continue His work in me. In each stage, I’ve experienced new challenges and learned new tactics. Each stage is unique. Each child is unique. It is so much better to rely on The Father than on my own wisdom in every matter.

In Proverbs 31, we read of a noble woman. She is a wife, mother, business owner, homemaker, caretaker, and so many other things. This snapshot of a woman throughout many stages of life is often daunting, but it does not have to be. Take one area at a time. Where do you struggle the most? Work on that – it will be noticed.

I am blessed beyond measure by an appreciative, supportive, loving husband. My children express far more gratitude than grumbling and most of the time enjoy learning and helping. I don’t consider these things of my own doing, but as treasures to be guarded. The King gave me these jewels for a set time and purpose. Will they shine with the care I give them when He needs them again?

I am not a supermom or a noble woman. I do things to the best of my abilities and rely on God to work everything out for our good. I cast my cares on Him and rest in His peace that passes my understanding.

Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:

“Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.”

Proverbs 31:27-28
