My Dwelling Place
The past few weeks have included sudden vision loss and the slow work of recovering sight. My life narrowed quickly as my independence became limited. I am used to going when and where I want, but now I am grounded in many ways. Unable to drive, limited sight interfering with daily tasks, and battling physical limitations sometimes make my home seem less like a haven and more like a lockdown.
Faith matters more than ever, not faith as a feeling, but faith anchored in what God has already promised. Even in my uncertainty, God did not move. His sovereignty and steadfastness never depend on individual circumstances. Nothing thwarts His purpose or derails His promise. God remains a permanent stronghold, no matter what life brings.
That truth is not new. It resounds through the history of God’s people.
Israel lived in constant motion. They followed God through the wilderness, raising and lowering tents as they went. Yet Moses recorded, “Lord, You have been our dwelling place throughout all generations” (Psalms 90:1).
The word translated as dwelling place is Maʿon, meaning a habitation or settled refuge. Psalm 90 is attributed to Moses in its superscription and reflects faith shaped during Israel’s wilderness years, before land, temple, or permanence defined life with God.
Israel’s shelters moved, but their refuge did not.
God never asked His people to find security in a location or a season. He called them to live within His presence. Even the tabernacle, holy and carefully designed, moved with them. God chose nearness over permanence and presence over place.
That same settled refuge is available now, not as an idea to admire, but as a reality in which we live.
That truth reaches its fullness in Jesus. John tells us that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14). The word dwelt means tabernacled. God stepped directly into human movement, uncertainty, and ordinary life. What the tabernacle symbolized, Jesus fulfilled.
This is where faith holds steady for me. When circumstances shift and familiar supports fall away, God’s promises remain unchanged. He does not withdraw when life narrows. He does not loosen His grip when independence fades. He remains my dwelling place.
A temporary season does not mean an absent God. Faith in His promises keeps us anchored. When the Lord is my Maʿon, I am never without a home, even while the path keeps moving.
