This summer, my congregation held a Bible Circus-themed Vacation Bible School. Lessons included Deborah, the Not Bearded Lady; Samson, the Strongest Man; and Daniel, the Lion Tamer. For many years, I’ve taught the memory verse and application session. This year, the two youngest groups were not only the largest classes, but the largest we’d ever had. Imagine teaching a dozen 4-5-year-olds a memory verse each day. Even though this group was a circus of its own, their joy and excitement outweighed the chaos.

In every class I teach, no matter how many students or their age, each person gets an opportunity to share. Even if I can’t understand them, I look them in the eye and listen as they speak. I use each person’s name and meet them where they are. No one leaves my class without being seen, heard, and loved.

A few days after VBS, my kids left for church camp, and I was alone much of the day. I spent my extra time helping children and teens create bulletin boards and door signs for the new Bible class year. I planned about four hours for the first group, but we finished in less than two—including taking down the old boards and cutting letters and large shapes. I expected the second group to take about two hours, but it took a little more than four.

The two groups differed greatly in personality, organization, and efficiency, but I enjoyed each person for all their individual talents and quirks.

I rarely remember to take before pictures. I occasionally remember to take pictures in the middle. I always remember to capture the finished bulletin boards.

Interestingly, the finished bulletin boards are visible reminders of something much greater.

It’s not about the “mess” of creating the bulletin boards. It’s about the conversations with the kids, the joking and laughter, and sometimes the quiet moments that remind me why being present matters. I’ve built this trust over years, simply by being present and listening. For some, that began when they were babbling toddlers and preschoolers.

Some moments are simply more important to experience than to photograph.

In both a room full of excited preschoolers during Vacation Bible School and an afternoon with a handful of older kids creating bulletin boards around a table, the lesson is the same.

God is often working in the unseen moments between life’s milestones. Those moments rarely make it into the photo album, yet they’re the ones that shape our hearts.

Since my week in the hospital, much of my recovery has depended on other people. Friends noticed needs and stepped in without hesitation. One coordinated hospital visits, so I was never alone when my husband had to work. Another stepped into my role as education coordinator, making sure every Bible class had a teacher and setting up a meal train. Others brought meals, sent gift cards, prayed, and stopped by once I was home.

My community showed up for us and served without question.

Usually, I am among the first to notice a need and act. That has been part of how God has shaped me for years. Right now, God has placed me in a different season. I am resting more. I am doing less. I am learning to pay closer attention to what truly belongs to me and what does not.

While my physical sight was diminished, my vision gained clarity and focus.

When we see a need and can meet it, responsibility follows. Sometimes we wait for someone else to do what God has placed directly in front of us.

An Acappella song has played repeatedly in my mind during long, wakeful nights as I wait for healing and allow God to refine my purpose. Everybody Said delivers its message with humor, but also with conviction. Everybody assumes somebody else will do the work. Anybody is capable. Too often, nobody acts.

Scripture names that tension clearly.

“If anyone, then, knows the good he ought to do and does not do it, he sins.” (James 4:17)

James is not describing ignorance. He is describing awareness without action. Knowing creates responsibility. Clarity calls for a response.

Seeing a need is not an accident. God often allows us to notice because He has already equipped us to respond. Scripture reminds us of this truth:

“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life.” (Ephesians 2:10, BSB)

Obedience does not require attention or applause. Faithful action often happens quietly, in ordinary moments, by people who choose not to look away.

Do not wait for somebody else to take action.
Everybody needs to be somebody.

Depending on where you live, storm preparation is a seasonal event, like “spring cleaning” or the “holidays.” Some places prepare for hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards, or wildfires. Preparing, by definition, means “to make ready beforehand.” I know both “extreme preppers” and those who aren’t even prepared for tomorrow. In our house, we are something in the middle. I have a box of shelf-stable food, jugs of water, and a wood-burning stove fireplace. The food box, depending on the time of year, is either a basement box or a blizzard box. We were not always as prepared as we are now, and we add to our preparations a little more each season.

The storms of life also require preparation. With the weather, you sometimes know what’s coming in time to do some last-minute prep work. Occasionally, weather storms come “out of the blue” or change trajectory suddenly. Life’s storms often hit us without warning. The loss of a loved one, the loss of a job, betrayal from a friend, or a terrifying diagnosis. Some build over time, like addiction or abuse. Even when we know something is coming, learning to surf the waves rather than drowning in rising tides is difficult.

We can prepare in advance for the storms. Scripture offers great encouragement and a warning. Jesus tells us plainly that we will have trouble in this world (John 16:33). The preparation for physical storms includes a safe place, emergency supplies, and important documents. The same is true for weathering the storms of life.

We need shelter. “You are my hiding place. You protect me from trouble; You surround me with songs of deliverance.” Psalm 32:7

We need supplies. “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” Ephesians 6:12–17

We need important documents, specifically the Word of God. “Keep my commandments and live, And my teaching as the apple of your eye. Bind them on your fingers; Write them on the tablet of your heart.” Proverbs 7:2–3

As a bonus, we need a fourth thing: a community to keep us accountable, encouraged, and to stand with us—even when we feel there is no strength left to stand. When we’ve come through the storm, we stand as a light for others!
